About Naomi Greenwald

Naomi Greenwald’s first full-length album Darkbloom is expected to be released in early 2011.  A rich and highly textured collection of original songs, Darkbloom traverses several genres that have influenced Naomi’s unique songwriting style since she began playing guitar while growing up in northeastern Pennsylvania.  Teaming up with producer Dave Trumfio (Wilco, Built to Spill, OK Go!, Rooney), Naomi Greenwald balances her vocals with a compelling use of folk, ‘60s and ‘70s rock (a la The Band and Fleetwood Mac), and indie rock tropes that push her intimate refrains toward their often haunting, vulnerable, and cathartic conclusions.

After nine years of living in Manhattan and Brooklyn where she played solo and with various members of the soon-to-be formed band Up the Empire, Naomi moved to Los Angeles to pursue a  PhD in comparative literature at USC.  In the summer after her first year, unsatisfied with the sleepy state of her music career, she recorded an EP which was self-released in May 2009.  Since then, she has been playing regular shows accompanied by some of LA’s best musicians including Jason Orme on guitar (Alanis Morisette, Desktop Rulers), Nick Rosen on bass (Perry Farell, Jon Brion), and Fern Sanchez on drums (Rachael Yamagata, Pete Yorn)—all while continuing her studies full time.  In order to record Darkbloom, Naomi invited Vincent Jones (Cowboy Junkies, Sarah McLauchlan) to play piano and keys and The Double D’s to play horns.  Naomi even enlisted members from the SoCal VoCals—USC’s a cappella group—to sing background vocals.

Over the course of Darkbloom, Naomi's lyrics are both defiant and restrained, tempered by her earnest, soulful voice.  While her musical style varies throughout the album, each track—from the rocklike crooning of “Cautionary Tale” to the surging, lilting heartache of “Price You Pay”—is grounded by Naomi’s resounding vocal presence.
